The steps to create a bleach stencil shirt are super easy, and it’s a project that you can get done in a relatively short amount of time. To create a tie-dyed look, gather, fold, and tie the fabric where you would like the pattern to be. To reverse tie-dye, mix a solution of 10 parts water and one part chlorine bleach. Submerge the gathered and tied fabric and allow it to soak until the background fabric is the desired color.

Bleach is common household cleaning agent that can be used in a variety of different ways. However, one of its most common uses is on clothing. Bleach is used to both whiten clothes and alter the colors of clothes that are not white. There are a handful of different methods for sprucing up a shirt by whitening it, by brightening it, or by giving it a “makeover” with bleach. There are many different ways to tie, bundle or stitch your shirt to make different patterns.

I loved your tutorial, it looks like fun, I can't wait to try a stencil...I just started trying my hand at tie dying, it's fun and relaxes me. I'm going to give the clorox toilet bowl cleaner a try on a few black tees I just invested in...lol... I also started silversmithing a couple of years ago...mostly self taught bought a lot of books and watched hundreds of hours on Youtube, I'll be watching 100's more. I've invested thousands in tools a lot more in silver and gemstones... I decided to start all these art projects at 61, I'm 63 now...
It’s best to have a piece of cardboard that fills as much of the shirt as possible. Just take your time, and don’t worry if you get a small rip. When you’ve decided where you want your image, stick it to the shirt. Anywhere you put it, make sure you leave room for the bleach area to surround the stencil.
In our first method, we’ll be using a vinyl stencil cut with the Cricut machine. This technique is perfect for people who want to achieve more crisp and precise designs on their bleached shirts. My camera is a bit colorblind….This bleach shirt design technique is a little different.

These techniques are called Tie Dye, Shibori Dyeing or Resist Dyeing. You can apply the same folding methods to reverse dyeing with bleach. This step by step tutorial shows you how I bleach dyed Spiral, Accordion Fold, Flag Fold, Pole Wrapped and Bullseye Tie Dye patterns.
Stay away from synthetic fibers like Polyester or Acrylic. These materials are very unpredictable and may not work at all. I wanted to put a couple of simple designs on the front of these red shorts. For inspiration and design, I dug out one of our beach towels which has flowers and dragon flies on it. You will have a more muted design with shades of color based on your original fabric. When the desired look is achieved, immediately pour some neutralizing solution directly on the bleached design area. Then, transfer the fabric to the neutralizing solution, submerge the entire garment for 10 minutes, and gently agitate. The neutralizing solution is made by mixing one part hydrogen peroxide with 10 parts water.
It also helps keep your bleach from running past your stencil lines and gives an easier surface to work with. A negative stencil allows you to bleach the design right onto your shirt, like with this moonflower stencil here. Allow the shirt to sit for up to 20 minutes until the bleach area reaches your desired color. VERY carefully flip the shirt over, and do the same on the back of your shirt. Be careful not to saturate the back of the shirt so that it bleeds through to the front! You don’t want the bleach from the back side to bleach that design that you masked on the front.
For this shirt, I want to keep the sunset pieces on the backing and remove everything else. Fold and wrap the shirt sleeves and any excess fabric around to the back side of the cardboard. Cover everything with a sheet of paper and use the scraper tool to make sure that the vinyl is firmly adhered to the shirt. I usually let it dry for just a little bit, maybe 10 minutes or so, after dabbing the excess bleach off.
My kids LOVE this bleached shirts project, and we’ve made lots of them over the years. Next, you’ll want to dab the bleach mixture off the vinyl or the cardstock stencil, so it won’t create a mess when you remove it. The spray tends to collect in drops, especially on vinyl. I used a little masking tape on the back of the shirt to keep it in place during the bleach stencil process, but this is totally optional. If you’ve never tried to customize tailored dress shirts online before, you might be skeptical.
There are many different types of spray bottles that you can use for your bleaching solution. For the techniques in this post, I recommend using a continuous-mist spray bottle and a spray bottle that has both a stream and spray nozzle. You’ll be super gratified because you’ll already be able to see your design appearing on the shirt. Be sure to leave the cardboard inside the t-shirt, as it will protect the back from bleed over. Bring your prepared shirt with the stencil attached, your paper towels, and your bleach spray with you. I recommend mixing the bleach with an equal part of water when prepping for this bleach shirt project.
